Baseball Drops Game One of Ingles I-26 Rivalry

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The spring portion of the Ingles I-26 Rivalry began Friday evening as the UNC Asheville baseball team traveled to face the USC Upstate Spartans. The Bulldogs dropped game one of the series 14-4.
Upstate scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning with a two-run homer and added another run in the second. Asheville answered in the third, as Corbin Lanowitz tied the game with a double down the right field line to score Robbie Burnett, Ty Kaufman, and Ben Hemphill. A solo home run in the bottom of the frame helped the Spartans back out in front.
An inning later, an error and a home run helped Upstate take a 7-3 lead. The Bulldogs got a run back in the fifth, as Dylan Bacot scored Hemphill with a hit to left center (7-4), but that would be the final run the Bulldogs would score as Upstate went on to score seven more runs and hold Asheville scoreless.
Brock Mercado and Kaufman had the only multi-hit games for Asheville, with Mercado recording two and Kaufman having three. Lanowitz led the team with three RBIs and had the only extra-base hit for the Bulldogs. Bacot grabbed a hit and an RBI, and Burnett, Michael Groves, and Hemphill each recorded a hit.
The Spartans outhit Asheville 15-10 and took advantage of three Bulldog errors to push three runs across.
The Bulldogs and Spartans will play game two of the series tomorrow, Friday, March 29, at 5 p.m.
