Bulldogs Take Sunday Victory over Charleston Southern

03.24.2024 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball took the final game of its Big South Conference series against Charleston Southern with a 5-3 win at Greenwood Field on Sunday (Mar. 24).

Asheville scored first in the first inning, with Dylan Bacot coming home on a single to left by Cameron Johnson. Charleston Southern rallied for two runs in the top half of the third with a double down the left field line by Christian Bauman that scored two runs, before Asheville rallied to take the lead for good with three runs in the home half. Ty Kaufman singled through the right side to lead off the inning, before Bacot drew a one-out walk to advance him into scoring position. Both runners moved up on a balk, before Corbin Lanowitz singled to center to score Kaufman. After a Charleston Southern pitching change, Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Groves drew a walk to bring home Bacot. After a second pitching change, Kohl Abrams was hit by a pitch to score Lanowitz as the Bulldogs re-gained their lead at 4-2. Asheville would add one run in the bottom of the fourth, when a sacrifice fly from Lanowitz brought home Robbie Burnett to make it 5-2. Charleston Southern would get back within two in the eighth with one run, before threatening in the ninth. After the Dogs extinguished the first threat with their second double play of the game earlier in the inning, Christian Tuupo would keep Charleston Southern alive with a two-out, two-strike single to left. Dakota Miller then laced a double to left center, as Tuupo rounded third attempting to score. The throw came in from Lanwotiz in the gap to Abrams on the relay, who fired a one-hop dart to Coleman McGinnis to put the tag on Tuupo at the plate and secure the win for the Bulldogs.

Johnson led the Bulldogs with three hits in the game, while Bacot had two hits and Kaufman, Lanowitz, Groves and Abrams each had one hit. Bacot scored two runs in the game, while Kaufman, Burnett and Lanowitz each scored once. Lanowitz drove in two runs in the game, while Johnson, Groves and Abrams each drove in one run apiece. Colby Guy (4-1) picked up the win on the mound, scattering two runs on six hits through six innings with three walks and five strikeouts, while Justin Honeycutt picked up his first save of the season firing three innings of relief scattering four hits allowing one run with one strikeout.

The Bulldogs return to the diamond on Tuesday (Mar. 26) to host Appalachian State in non-conference action. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
