Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener at Mercer Monday Night

MACON, Ga. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its season opener to Mercer Monday night (Nov. 4) by a score of 75-52.
 
Mercer jumped out to an 18-7 lead through the first quarter, before outscoring Asheville 21-11 in the second quarter to take a 39-18 lead to the break.
 
Asheville played a close third quarter offensively, scoring 15 points to Mercer's 20. Asheville would find their groove offensively in the fourth quarter, outscoring Mercer 19-16 in the period.
 
Asheville shot 38.8 percent (19-49) from the field, 18.8 percent (3-16) from long range and 64.7 percent (11-17) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Mercer 26-19 off turnovers and 29-17 off the bench, while also scoring 24 points in the paint and 13 points off fast breaks. LaImani Simmons led the Bulldogs with nine points in the game, while Alana Swift added seven points in her Bulldog debut. Abigail Wilson and Jordan Tuff each chipped in six points, while Dakota McCaughan and Taylor Wilkins each scored five points. Skylar Bailey and Briauna Thompson each contributed four points with Bailey notching a new career-high, while Trinity Fields and Deb Orianegbena each had three points in the game. Wilson led the effort with four rebounds in the game, while Tuff and Orianegbena each had three. Sydney Burris pulled down her first two rebounds as a Bulldog, while Simmons, McCaughan, Nycerra Minnis and Wilkins each had one rebound in the game. Fields set a new career-high with three assists in the game to lead the Bulldogs, while McCaughan had two and Swift notched her first assist as a Bulldog. McCaughan, Swift and Orianegbena each led the Bulldogs with two steals, while Simmons, Wilson, Tuff, Wilkins, Burris and Thompson each had one steal in the game. Wilson posted the lone block in the game for the Bulldogs.
 
The Bulldogs return to action next Wednesday (Nov. 13) at Virginia Tech. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. from Blacksburg, Va. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
