Women's Basketball Falls at Virginia Tech Wednesday Night

BLACKSBURG, Va. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball fell at Virginia Tech Wednesday night (Nov. 13) by a score of 85-62.

Asheville contained the Hokie offense for the first few minutes, playing to a 4-4 stalemate, before Virginia Tech closed the quarter on a 14-2 run for an 18-6 lead.

Virginia Tech maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter, taking a 41-22 lead to the half.

Asheville seemed to find their offensive groove in the third quarter, scoring 20 points to Virginia Tech's 26.

Asheville responded in the fourth quarter, winning the frame 20-18 to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville outscored Virginia Tech 13-10 on second chances and 31-26 off the bench in the game while also scoring 14 points off turnovers, 30 points in the paint and four points off fast breaks. Asheville shot 36.5 percent (23-63) from the field, 15.8 percent (3-19) from long range and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the charity stripe in the game. Alana Swift and Taylor Wilkins each had a team-high 12 points to pace the offense, with Wilkins notching a new career-high and Swift just one off her career-high. Abigail Wilson contributed 10 points in the game to eclipse 600 points for her collegiate career, while Jordan Tuff and LaImani Simmons each had six points in the game. Laney Bone scored her first five points as a Bulldog, while Deb Orianegbena notched a career-high four points and Nycerra Minnis added three. Trinity Fields and Jazlyn Ware rounded out the scoring with two points apiece. Asheville kept the rebound battle close on the glass, grabbing 31 boards as a team to Virginia Tech's 34. Wilson led the effort with a season-high six boards on the night, while Orianegbena grabbed a career-high four boards. Tuff and Fields each pulled in three rebounds, with Fields recording a new career-high. Swift, Minnis and Wilkins each collected two rebounds in the game, while Skylar Bailey, Bone, Dakota McCaughan and Trinity Barnes each had one rebound in the game. Wilson matched her career-high with a team-best three assists in the game, while Swift dished out two and Tuff, Minnis, Bone, Fields and McCaughan each had one.
