09.03.2023 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer extended its winning streak to four with a 2-1 win over Furman at Greenwood Field on Sunday (Sept. 3), marking the first 4-1 start and the best start to the season for the program since 2015.
Asheville defended its own end well for the first 15 minutes, before pushing into the offensive end in the next 15. A ball was fed through the middle from Taylor Gardner to Kaiya Boyd, who then spotted Barrett Eidson streaking to the back post. Eidson got a left foot touch to put it past Addison Corn for her first of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, a lead they would take to the half.
Just three minutes into the second half, Asheville won a battle on the near sideline for a corner kick to be taken by Azalea Mihailovich. Mihailovich's service would find the head of Shae Hassig, who put home her first career goal in the 49th minute to give the Bulldogs some insurance at 2-0. Furman wouldn't go quietly, as the Paladins responded with a goal in the 65th minute off the foot of Valentina Mosquera, her fourth of the season off an assist from Ashlyn Goila. Furman would push the pace and keep up the pressure in the remaining 25 minutes, but Asheville was able to hold on for the victory, its first over Furman since a 5-0 win back on Sept. 7, 1995.
Asheville totaled 10 shots in the match, led by three from Eidson and two from Nao Kawasaki. Anna Doane, Hassig, Ava Bjorkman-Tracy, Boyd and Gardner also each registered one shot in the match. Asheivlle also totaled five corner kicks in the contest. Gracie Murray (3-1-0) picked up her third consecutive win between the pipes, making six saves in the match.
The Bulldogs (4-1-0) are back in action on Thursday (Sept. 7) to host The Citadel for National Beer Lover's Day. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. Â
