Women's Soccer Battles to Weather-Shortened Scoreless Draw with The Citadel

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer battled to a scoreless draw with The Citadel Thursday night (Sept. 7) at Greenwood Field, with the match being called in the 80th minute due to weather.
The Citadel applied solid offensive pressure in the first half, out-shooting Asheville 5-4 and winning the corner kick battle 4-2 in the period. Asheville did break through for a chance in the 28th minute, as a ball was fed into the box for Kaiya Boyd, who put it high and rang a shot off the crossbar. Despite the pressure from The Citadel, the Bulldogs defense held strong as
Gracie Murray did not have to record a save in the period as the teams went to the break scoreless.
Asheville picked up the pace offensively in the second half, out-working The Citadel for corner kicks 4-3 and also recording seven shots in the frame forcing The Citadel's Nora Sampson to make six saves in the half. Asheville's best chance at the back of the net would come in the 68th minute, as the Bulldogs mustered a flurry of activity off a ball into the box. Taylor Gardner put a shot on target to be stopped by Sampson, before Azalea Mihailovich picked up the rebound and put it back on target to be stopped again by Sampson. The ball deflected right back to Gardner, whose shot was blocked by a defender and deflected out for a corner kick.
Gardner and Nao Kawasaki each had three shots in the match for Asheville, while Ava Bjorkman-Tracy and Boyd each had two and Mihailovich also had one. Murray (3-1-1) made two saves in her third shutout of the season.Â
The Bulldogs (4-1-1) return to action on Sunday (Sept. 10) to host Mercer in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. Â
