Bulldogs Earn Hard-Fought Draw with Mercer on Sunday

09.10.2023 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Mercer on Sunday (Sept. 10) at Greenwood Field.

Mercer used their speed to push the pace early in the match, eventually striking first in the 26th minute when Sydney Farr scored her second of the season off an assist by Chandler Lewis-Jenkins. Asheville would respond in the 37th minute after sustained offensive pressure set up a corner kick for Azalea Mihailovich. Mihailovich served a ball into the box that found the foot of Anna Doane, who beat Mercer keeper Lindsay Bell low for her first career goal to tie the match at 1-1. The teams would take the deadlock to the half.

Mercer would re-take the lead in the 56th minute off a set piece from Lews-Jenkins that found the foot of Jada Moorman out of the air. Moorman was able to find the back of the net to give Mercer the lead 2-1. Asheville would push back in the 60th minute, with Mihailovich creating a run down the near wing. She forced the ball into the middle to find Nao Kawasaki, who turned and fired to beat Bell low left for the equalizer and her second of the season. Both teams created offensive chances in the final 30 minutes, including one last-ditch effort from Asheville in the final minutes. Taylor Gardner sped down the far wing, before cutting back to the middle and lofting one toward the net. Gardner's shot rang off the crossbar, as Asheville would hold strong defensively for the final two minutes.

Each team registered 15 shots in the match, with Asheville holding the 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Asheville also totaled five corner kicks in the match. Kaiya Boyd paced Asheville with four shots in the contest, while Kawasaki had three and Mihailovich and Gardner each had two. Barrett Eidson, Doane, Shae Hassig and Ashley Macfarlane each had one shot in the match for Asheville. Lexi Dooley (1-0-1) made three saves in her second start of the season.

The Bulldogs (4-1-2) returns to the pitch on Thursday (Sept. 14) at Morehead State in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. from Morehead, Ky., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
