09.14.2023 | Women's Soccer
MOREHEAD, Ky. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer used a late rally to battle to a 2-2 draw at Morehead State on Thursday (Sept. 14). With the team's third consecutive draw, the Bulldogs have now tied a program record for longest unbeaten streak at seven matches, now going 4-0-3 in their last seven contests. Asheville has now posted seven straight matches without a loss three times in program history, with the previous two occurrences in 2004 and 1996. Â
Morehead State created the first real offensive chance in the 15th minute, forcing Gracie Murray to make back-to-back doorstep saves to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. The teams would trade chances throughout the first half, before heading to the break scoreless.
Morehead State would break through for the first goal of the match in the 57th minute. Off a free kick set into the box by Natalie Ledin, Sarah Faloon played it on to Anna Lohrer who scored to put the Eagles ahead. Asheville would counter with a goal of its own in the 68th minute for the equalizer. After a turnover deep in Morehead State territory, Asheville was able to capitalize as Julia Hüsch played a ball down the far wing for Nao Kawasaki who crossed it into the box. The ball found Daysha Chaney, who scored her first goal of the season off the deflection to tie things 1-1. Morehead State would get the winner in the 80th minute as a ball was played in from the near wing by Michelle Hochstadt, before being punched out by Gracie Murray. The ball deflected right to Colleen Swift, who stashed the ball home in the lower right corner to re-gain the lead for the Eagles. Asheville would create one last gasp in the final three minutes, that began with Anna Doane knocking down a Morehead State free kick and playing it forward to ultimately find the feet of Taylor Gardner. Gardner brought the ball under control and played it through a charging Michelle Jerantowski for her second goal of the season and the equalizer.
Morehead State edged Asheville in shots 16-15, with Asheville putting four shots on goal. Asheville edged Morehead State in corner kicks 6-4. Gardner paced Asheville with a career-high seven shots in the match, while Barrett Eidson, Addie Cooper and Chaney each had two shots in the contest. Shae Hassig and Ava Bjorkman-Tracy also each contributed one shot in the match. Grace Murray (3-1-2) recorded six saves in the match between the pipes.
The Bulldogs (4-1-3) are back in action next Saturday (Sept. 23) to open Big South Conference play at USC Upstate. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from Spartanburg, S.C., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. Â
