ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville welcomes Western Carolina for the 2023 season opener on Thursday (Aug. 17). Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field.

Promotions - The women's soccer team invites all new UNC Asheville students to tomorrow's game for a New Student Bash, featuring The Hop Ice Cream and Bubble Tea gift certificate giveaways, face painting, paw fan giveaways and poster giveaways. 

About the Bulldogs - Asheville comes into the match returning 17 letter-winners and eight starters from a season ago, including 2023 Preseason All-Conference and 2022 Second Team All-Conference selection midfielder Anna Doane and 2022 Second Team All-Conference and All-Freshman Team selection Azalea Mihailovich. Doane and Mihailovich each finished tied for second on the team in assists (two), while Mihailovich also finished tied for second on the team in goals (three) and third on the team in points (eight). Asheville also welcomes eight new Bulldogs to the mix in 2023.

About the Catamounts – Western Carolina was tabbed fifth in the Southern Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, led by 2023 Preseason All-Conference forward Isabella DeMarco. DeMarco collected her postseason honors in 2022 after she tied for the team lead with four goals and finished second on the squad with four assists – a mark that put her in a tie for 10th-best in the league. The Charleston, S.C., native tallied only the fourth hat trick in a match in program history with three goals as part of a 6-1 triumph at The Citadel on Oct. 11. She found the back of the net for the first time in her career as part of a 4-1 home victory against VMI on Oct. 9. All told, DeMarco finished ninth in the league with 2.17 shots per game.

Series History - This will be the 19th all-time meeting between Asheville and Western Carolina, with Western Carolina leading the all-time series 12-3-3. Last season, Western Carolina defeated Asheville 3-1 on Sept. 1, 2022.
