08.17.2023 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's soccer fell to visiting Western Carolina in a close non-conference contest in the season opener by a score of 1-0.
The teams played a physical yet scoreless first half, with each team registering five shots and altering possessions both in the midfield and respective attacking ends.
Western created the first great chance of the second half about four and a half minutes in, crossing a ball in from the far side as Isabella DeMarco beat an Asheville defender and goalkeeper Gracie Murray only to hit the left post before a successful Asheville clear extinguished the threat.
Asheville would continue to play solid defense in the home half of the pitch, before the Catamounts connected on a few nice passes to free Isabella DeMarco, who fired a shot top left for the winner off an assist from Milla Syska in the 77th minute. Asheville's effort in the final 20 minutes created chances, but the Bulldogs were unable to find the back of the net in the final push. Asheville's best chance of the second half came with four and a half minutes left on an opportunity in the box off the foot of Taylor Gardner, but Western Carolina's Leanne Trudel made a sprawling save to preserve the shutout.
Asheville totaled nine shots in the contest, with five of them on frame while also totaling six corner kicks in the match. Gardner and Addie Cooper each posted a team-high two shots in the game, while Barrett Eidson, Anna Doane, Azalea Mihailovich, Ava Bjorkman-Tracy and Karlee Benz each registered one shot apiece in the match. Eidson, Cooper, Julia Hüsch and Shae Hassig each played all 90 minutes for Asheville. Gracie Murray took the loss between the pipes, making a career-high five saves in the match.
The Bulldogs are on the pitch next on Sunday (Aug. 20) for a non-conference road tilt at VMI. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. from Lexington, Va., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
