Benz's First Career Goal Seals Late Victory for Bulldogs
08.20.2023 | Women's Soccer
LEXINGTON, Va. - Karlee Benz's first career goal off an assist from Ava Bjorkman-Tracy in the 75th minute sealed a late non-conference victory for UNC Asheville women's soccer over VMI on Sunday (Aug. 20).
The teams traded runs and possessions in their respective attacking ends, with each team posting seven shots in the first half. Azalea Mihailovich created several chances in the Bulldog attacking end, along with several good runs from Kaiya Boyd. Lexi Dooley also made a doorstep save in a one-on-one opportunity with 1:20 remaining in the half to send the match to the half scoreless.
Dooley would come up big again on another breakaway opportunity in the 62nd minute, when a VMI shot deflected off the post, back to Barrett Callejo who then put the ball right back on net before Dooley collected another doorstep save. The Bulldogs pushed a late run down the wing in the final 15 minutes, as Bjorkman-Tracy would float a ball into the box that found a streaking Benz who just needed one touch to find the top corner of the twine for her first career goal. Asheville was able to control the clock after the goal to secure the shutout win on the road.
Asheville totaled 12 shots in the match, with five of them on goal. Boyd led the Bulldogs with four shots in the contest, while Taylor Gardner had three and Mihailovich had two. Sina Anger and Addie Cooper also each registered one shot in the contest. In addition to making several key doorstep saves in the match, Dooley earned her first career shutout and also notched a new career high in saves with six.
The Bulldogs (1-1-0) return to the pitch on Thursday (Aug. 24) to take on Davidson on the road. The match is set for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff from Davidson, N.C., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
