Bulldogs Launch Three Home Runs but Fall at ETSU, 12-6

05.09.2023 | Baseball

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville baseball team fell at ETSU on Tuesday night in non-conference action by a score of 12-6. With Tuesday's loss, the Bulldogs move to 21-24 on the season.

The Bulldog offense fared well against ETSU's pitching staff on Tuesday slugging three home runs and totaling 12 hits. The three home runs were the most in a game for Asheville since it hit three long balls vs. USC Upstate back on April 15.

Kohl Abrams, Dylan Bacot, and Michael Groves accounted for the three Bulldog home runs. Abrams finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a double, and a pair of walks. Groves also had a two-hit day (2-for-4) with two runs scored. Finally, Bacot, who hit a two-run home run in the third, drove in his 49th and 50th runs of the season on Tuesday. Bacot is just the ninth Bulldog to ever drive in 50 or more runs in a season in program history.

The Buccaneer offense came out swinging on Tuesday as they scored 10 runs in the first three innings of the contest. Bacot's two-run blast in the third got Asheville on the board but the Bulldogs still had a sizable deficit to overcome heading into the middle innings.

Asheville kept chipping away at the Buccaneer lead in the middle innings. The Bulldogs scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one more in the sixth to make it a four-run game going to the bottom of the sixth, 10-6.

Reliever Justin Needles threw back-to-back shutout innings to give the Bulldog offense a chance to battle back. However, three Asheville errors in the sixth chased home two more ETSU runs to grow its lead back to six, 12-6.

Cole Schiff and Spencer Hill came out of the Bulldog bullpen and combined to toss a pair of shutout innings to keep the deficit at six. Unfortunately, Asheville did not score in the final two frames and ETSU finished off the 12-6 victory.

Asheville will return home this weekend to host Radford for a three-game Big South series. The series opener will be played Friday evening at 5 p.m. at Greenwood Field.
