04.17.2023 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action on Tuesday when it visits Appalachian State in non-conference action. First pitch between the Bulldogs and Mountaineers is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Probable Pitching Matchup
RHP Chris Sabo (Asheville) vs. TBA (App State) – 6 p.m. | Live Stats | ESPN+
Last Time Out – Asheville came away with a 10-7 win over USC Upstate on Sunday at Greenwood Field. The victory not only clinched the series win over the Spartans for the Bulldogs but also boosted their overall record to 20-15 and 7-8 in Big South play.
Robbie on a Roll – Robbie Burnett has not only been one of Asheville's top hitters this season but also in the Big South. Burnett hit .444 in 18 at-bats last week with six runs scored, two home runs, four RBI, and three stolen bases. Burnett is the Big South leader in batting average (.397), slugging percentage (.794), and is tied for the league lead with 52 hits. Burnett is also second in the conference in home runs (12) and total bases (104).
Bacot at the top of the Big South – Dylan Bacot also ranks among the Big South leaders in multiple statistical categories. Bacot is tied for the league lead with 45 RBI and paces the conference with 14 doubles.
Record Watch – With roughly about a month remaining in the regular season, a few Bulldogs are within striking distance of achieving milestones few players have reached before them. Burnett's 12 home runs in 2023 are tied for the seventh-most in program history. Bacot, meanwhile, is sitting just outside the program's single season top 10 lists in both doubles and RBI.
Win #20 – With Sunday's win over USC Upstate, the Bulldogs have won 20 games in the 2023 season. In comparison, the Bulldogs did not win their 20th game until May 21.
About Appalachian State – The Mountaineers are 17-16 on the 2023 season. App State is a team powered by its offense as it is hitting a collective .271 so far this spring. Hayden Cross has led this charge hitting .325 with 17 extra base hits (12 doubles, two triples, three home runs) and 33 RBI. Cross has also nearly walked as much as he has struck out this season (16 walks to 19 strikeouts).
Series Rewind vs. the Mountaineers – Asheville and Appalachian State have met nearly 70 times over the years. The Mountaineers, who hold the edge in the all-time series 45-22, defeated the Bulldogs earlier this month by a score of 7-3 at Greenwood Field.
