Johnson's Late Home Run Lifts Bulldogs Past Appalachian State, 7-6

04.18.2023 | Baseball

BOONE, N.C. – In a game with multiple momentum swings, the UNC Asheville baseball team outlasted Appalachian State Tuesday night on the road by a score of 7-6. The win improves Asheville's record to 21-15 on the season. The 21 victories for the Bulldogs match their win total from all last season.

All nine members of Asheville's starting lineup reached base at least once on Tuesday. Tony Castonguay and Ty Kaufman both had a pair of hits. Corbin Lanowitz drove in a pair of runs, while Michael Groves and Cameron Johnson both hit key home runs in the victory. Johnson's, which was a solo shot in the eighth inning, was the deciding run in the game.

Asheville used a total of seven pitchers on Tuesday. The best work from the Bulldog pitching staff came late in the game as the trio of Branden Barna, Nick Bruno, and Dawson Salter closed the game with 4.2 shutout innings scattering two hits, two walks to go with four strikeouts.

App State would score first on Tuesday when Jonathan Xuereb launched a solo home run in the bottom of the second. Following that one run by the Mountaineers, the Bulldogs threatened in the top of the third. Castonguay doubled and Drew Bristow worked a walk to give Asheville's top of the order a chance with two runners on with one out. A flyout was followed by a walk before a Mountaineer error brought in Asheville's first run of the game and tied the score at 1-1.

The Bulldogs were not done there, however, a key two-out two-run single by Lanowitz scored both Bristow and Kohl Abrams to put Asheville on top, 3-1.

Facing a deficit for the first time in the contest, the Mountaineers answered Asheville's three runs with two or their own in the bottom of the third. Both of App State's runs that inning were with two outs. A triple, a single, a hit batter, wild pitch, and a balk in succession pushed a pair of runs across the plate for the Mountaineers and the score was again tied, 3-3.

Asheville took the lead back in the fourth with three hits. Tylan Reece got it started with a single before Castonguay collected his second hit of the game to give Asheville a pair of runners on. Kaufman came through with a key RBI double to put the Bulldogs back on top, 4-3.

The lead was short lived, however, as App State promptly tied the score again this time at four on a wild pitch by the Bulldogs.

Asheville and App State would trade two-run home runs in the fifth. Groves launched his sixth home run of the season to put the Bulldogs back in front, 6-4. The Mountaineers did the same with a two-run home run of their own to tie it up again, 6-6.

The deciding run came in the eighth inning as Johnson hit a solo home run, his seventh of the season, to give Asheville the lead as it turned out for good, 7-6.

As mentioned earlier, the Bulldog bullpen was stellar in the back half of Tuesday's contest. Barna, Bruno, and Salter combined for 4.2 shutout innings to close out the game and clinch Asheville's third win in its last four games played in Boone.

Asheville will be back in action this weekend when it travels to Rock Hill, S.C. for a three-game series at Winthrop. The series will begin on Friday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
