Women's Golf Finishes Sixth, Two Finish in the Top 15 at the Big South Conference Championships

GREENWOOD, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Golf took home a sixth-place finish, landing two individuals in the Top 15 on the final day of stroke play at the Big South Conference Championships on Friday (Apr. 14).
The Bulldogs turned in their best team round of the tournament with a 299 (+11) on the day, tying for the ninth-best team round in program history. Madyson Gold finished in a tie for 12th after shooting a 76 (+4) in the final round, while Phoebe Carles turned in a 73 (+1) to finish in a tie for 15th. Kayla Benge turned in a 75 (+3) to finish in a tie for 20th, while Ally Kerr also registered a 75 (+3) to finish in a tie for 29th. Venecia Zaia rounded things out for Asheville with a 79 (+7) to finish 47th.
Carles began her day with a par on No. 1, before back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and No. 3. After a par on No. 4, she would make double bogey on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 6 before a par on No. 7. She would make bogey on No. 8 and par on No. 9 before making the turn to the back. After a par on No. 10 and a birdie on No. 11, she would shoot even par the rest of the way to finish out her round.
Benge started her round with a bogey on No. 1 and pars on No. 2 and No. 3, before a bogey on No. 4. After a birdie on No. 5 and a double bogey on No. 6, She would make par on back-to-back pars before finishing the front nine with a bogey on No. 9. She would make par on No. 10 and No. 11 to start the back nine, before making birdie on No. 12 and bogey on No. 13 and No. 14. She would finish her round with a birdie on No. 15, a par on No. 16, a birdie on No. 17 and a par on No. 18.
Kerr began her day with a bogey on No. 1 and a par on No. 2, before making birdie on No. 3. She would score back-to-back pars on the next two holes, before making bogey on No. 6 and birdie on No. 7. She would make the turn to the back after pars on No. 8 and No. 9. She would bogey No. 10 and No. 11 to start the back nine, before making birdie on No. 12 and pars on No. 13 and No. 14. She would bogey No. 15 and No. 16, before finishing her round with pars on No. 17 and No. 18.
Gold registered pars on No. 1 and No. 2 to begin her day, before making birdie on No. 3 and bogey on No. 4. She would go on to post four straight pars before making double bogey on No. 9 before turning to the back. After a par on No. 10 and a bogey on No. 11 to start the back, she would make par on No. 12 and No. 13. She would bogey No. 14 and par No. 15, before finishing her round with a bogey on No. 16, a birdie on No. 17 and a par on No. 18. Â
Zaia began her day with a bogey on No. 1 and a par on No. 2, before making a bogey on No. 3. She would par the next four holes, before making a double bogey on No. 8 and a par on No. 9 before making the turn to the back. She would birdie No. 10 and bogey No. 11 to start the back nine, before rattling off four straight pars. She would wrap up her round with bogeys on the final three holes.
"It's a disappointing end to what was otherwise a pretty successful season," said head coach Ross Cash. "We played okay today, but simply gave everyone too much of a head start after the first two days. We accomplished too much throughout the season to let this misstep define us. We set several program and individual records throughout the year, had our first individual tournament winner and several top five finishes in great events. I'm proud of the team and the direction we are heading."
