KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville baseball team battled but fell on the road at No. 10 Tennessee on Tuesday night by a score of 5-0. The loss moves Asheville's record to 15-9 on the 2023 campaign.
Corbin Lanowitz led the way for Asheville's offense on Tuesday. Lanowitz picked up the lone hit of the contest for the Bulldogs and drew a walk as well. Drew Bristow and Robbie Burnett also worked walks for Asheville.
On the pitching side, Asheville used nine pitchers against the Volunteers. Blake Little and Spencer Hill both logged perfect relief outings, while Cole Bates, Cole Schiff, Justin Needles, and Isaac Gonzales all allowed just one base runner in their respective outings.
Neither team had much going offensively through the first four innings. With the score tied 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Tennessee broke through with a solo home run off the bat of Christian Scott.
The Volunteers added three runs in the sixth thanks to a solo home run, a balk, and an RBI groundout to make the score 4-0 Tennessee. The Volunteers would tack on one more run in the seventh, which was unearned, to grow their lead to 5-0.
Asheville did not muster much offensively against the Volunteer pitching staff. The Bulldogs were limited to one hit and three walks on Tuesday. It also marked just the second time this season that Asheville was shut out in a game with the other being February 21 at Wofford.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend when they welcome Presbyterian to Greenwood Field for a three-game Big South series. The series will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
