Women's Basketball Falls to Gardner-Webb in the Big South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's basketball fell to top-seeded Gardner-Webb in the Hercules Tires Big South Conference tournament quarterfinals on Thursday (Mar. 2) at Bojangles Coliseum by a score of 82-58.
The Bulldogs battled in the game for three quarters, before Gardner-Webb took control in the fourth.
The teams traded buckets and the lead to open the game, before Gardner-Webb built a six-point lead part way through. The Runnin' Bulldogs held the lead for the frame, but Asheville was able to chip away as Gardner-Webb led 24-16 after 10 minutes.
Gardner-Webb's lead extended into double digits early in the second, before the Bulldogs trimmed it to seven with scores on two of its next three possessions. Gardner-Webb responded with a run that shot the deficit back up to 15, before the Bulldogs closed the final two minutes of the half with six unanswered to cut the deficit to nine at the break. A jumper from Abigail Wilson was followed by a score from Jordaynia Ivie on the next possession, while a pair of McKinley Brooks-Sumpter free throws closed the gap to 36-27 as the teams headed to the half.
Gardner-Webb would push their lead back into double digits early in the third, before Asheville would chip away to get the game back to single digits. Once Gardner-Webb regained its double-digit lead, they held it until the end of the quarter.
Asheville battled until the final horn throughout the fourth quarter.
Asheville scored 17 points off turnovers, 22 points in the paint, 11 points off second chances, two points off fast breaks and 15 points off the bench in the game. Ivie led the Bulldogs with 18 points in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter also had 13. Wilson added seven points in the game, while Jamaya Blanks and Nycerra Minnis each had six points. Faith Adams contributed five points in the game, while Millie Brown also scored three. Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds in the game, while Ivie and Wilson had six apiece and Blanks also had five. Minnis, Adams, Mallory Bruce and Jamia Blake each had two rebounds in the game, while Brown also had one. Brooks-Sumpter dished out a team-high five assists in the game, while Dakota McCaughan helped on two Asheville buckets in the contest. Blanks, Adams and Bruce also had one assist each in the game. Brooks-Sumpter also led the way with four steals in the game, while Wilson also had one. Blanks posted Asheville's lone rejection in the game.
