Baseball Drops Series Opener at Charleston Southern on Friday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNC Asheville baseball dropped its Big South Conference series opener at Charleston Southern on Friday (Mar. 17) by a score of 8-2.
Charleston Southern struck for two runs in the home half of the first off a two-run homer from Chandler Tuuop, before building the lead to 4-0 through the first three innings. The Bulldogs countered with two runs in the top half of the fourth on one swing of the bat from Tylan Reece. After Corbin Lanowitz started the inning reaching first on a wild pitch after a strikeout, Reece stepped to the plate with two outs and blasted his third home run of the season to tie the game at four. The Buccaneers would counter with one run in the home half of the fourth and two more in the fifth, before tacking on another in the bottom of the seventh to bring the game to its final score.
Reece and Tony Castonguay each recorded hits in the game for Asheville, while Reece drove in both Bulldog runs. Clay Edmondson (4-1) took the loss on the hill for the Bulldogs, allowing seven runs (four earned) on nine hits through 4.1 innings while walking one and striking out two. Cole Bates relieved Edmondson, tossing 2.2 innings of relief allowing one run on two hits.
Branden Barna would also toss a clean inning of relief in the game for Asheville.
The Bulldogs (12-5, 0-1 Big South Conference) return to the diamond for game two of the series tomorrow (Saturday, Mar. 18). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Nielsen Field at CSU Ballpark, with video (ESPN+) and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. Â
