PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The UNC Asheville women's golf team sits in fifth place with two Bulldogs inside the Top 10 after the first day of the Lady Bison Classic at Bay Point Golf Club on Sunday (Feb. 5).
The Bulldogs shot 306 as a team, sitting just three shots off of third-place North Alabama and 15 shots off tournament leader Lipscomb (295, +2).Â
Ally Kerr shot an even par 72 in her first round as a Bulldog, sitting in a tie for fourth place individually. Phoebe Carles sits in a tie for 10th individually, shooting a +2 74 on the first day. Venecia Zaia and Amber Capote each turned in a +7 79 in the first round, sitting in a tie for 29th individually after day one. Zaia with her birdie on the final hole of today's round has tied the program's career birdies record with No. 108 of her career. Kayla Benge (81), Madyson Gold (83) and Sierra Cardi (85) also turned in scores for the Bulldogs.
Kerr began her round with a birdie on the par-three No. 9, before notching three consecutive pars. After carding bogeys on No. 14 and 15, Kerr scored par on No. 16 and 17 before recording a bogey on No. 18 for a two-over back nine. Turning over to the front, she notched four consecutive pars to start before posting birdies on No. 5 and No. 6. She scored par on the final three holes to finalize her even par round.
Carles began her round with a par on No. 8, before a bogey on No. 9 put her at one-over. She began the back nine with a bogey on No. 10, before rallying for a par on No. 11 and a birdie on No. 12. She would par the remaining back nine holes before turning it back over to the front. She would score par on every hole from No. 1 to No. 6, before posting a bogey on No. 7 to complete her round.
"I think Ally and Phoebe played very solid golf today," said head coach Ross Cash. "The Nicklaus course here at Bay Point is hard and they managed their way around nicely. We are in fifth place after day one and that is okay but ultimately our team is better than this and they know it. We are raising the bar here at UNCA and I expect we will all come out ready to go for tomorrow and for the last round on Tuesday."
The team returns to action tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 6) for the second day of tournament play at Bay Point Golf Club. Play will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start, along with live results available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
