CHARLESTON, S.C. - The UNC Asheville women's golf team sits tied for eighth after one day of the Rivertowne Invitational, with Phoebe Carles tied for first individually after the first round.

The Bulldogs (+5) are tied with USC Upstate, sitting just one shot behind Jacksonville and High Point (T6) and two shots behind Elon (5). Asheville's team round of 293 sits fourth all-time on the team low round list.

"I am super proud of the way Phoebe bounced back after the disappointment at the end of Panama Beach tournament," said head coach Ross Cash. "She has really worked hard and we have done a lot of confidence training. Kayla played a super solid round as well and is brimming with confidence after today's golf. We are just starting to see glimpses of how good we are as a team. When we put together a round where all five players are playing their best golf, we will be able to compete with anyone. It is coming!"

Carles leads the Bulldogs after a personal-best 69 (-3) on the first day, notching the third-lowest round score in program history. Kayla Benge sits tied for 10th after a 71 (-1) in the first round. Madyson Gold turned in a 75 (+3) on the first day, sitting in a tie for 45th individually. Ally Kerr also registered a 78 (+6) in the first round, while Venecia Zaia turned in a 79 (+7).

Carles started her day with back-to-back pars on No. 10 and No. 11, before making a bogey on No. 12 and a birdie on No. 13 to get back to even. She finished out her first nine shooting even par on No. 14 through No. 18, before making the turn. She posted a birdie on No. 1, before making par on No. 2 and an eagle on No. 3. She would shoot even par through the rest of the round.

Benge began her day with a par on No. 10, before making a birdie on No. 11 and shooting even par on No. 12 through No. 18 before making the turn. She started off the front nine with a birdie on No. 1 and a par on No. 2, before again making birdie on No. 3. After a par on No. 4, Benge posted a triple-bogey on No. 5 before rebounding with a birdie on No. 6. Benge would go on to make even par the rest of the way.

Through Gold's opening round of 75, she moved into second place on the all-time career birdie list (110) behind teammate Zaia (111).

The Bulldogs return to the links for day two of the tournament tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 27), with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start from Rivertowne Golf Club. Live results will be available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
