Day One Results

BLACKSBURG, Va. -
The UNC Asheville track and field team displayed several outstanding performances on the first day of the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships. Three veteran Bulldogs dominated their respective events, with numerous others qualified in their preliminary races and scored personal- bests in their events.

Overall, the men's team is in third place with 27 points and the women's squad is in fifth place with 22 points heading into Saturday.

Along with taking first prize in the event, Adam Hessler shattered the previous Asheville program record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:31.18, running almost a full 25 seconds faster than the previous record set in 2008 by Jon Harmon (14:55.76). The junior distance runner now has his name decorated throughout the UNC Asheville record books, owning the records in the One Mile, Indoor 5000-meter, 10K, and runner-up in the outdoor 5000-meter and Indoor 3000-meter.

Claudia Prieto continued her dominant season in the long jump, winning the event by tying her own school record of 6.03 meters. This is the second indoor championship in-a-row in which Prieto jumped this distance. After finishing second in last year's competition, Prieto now wins the event while also qualifying for the 60-meter dash with a sixth place finish of 7.71.

Solomon McDonald also won the shot put after finishing second in last year's championships with a distance of 18.10-meters. Facing stiff competition, McDonald won the event by just .02 meters, continuing his amazing performances this season.

Other notable performances include two qualifying times in the 60-meter hurdles from Nick Roberts (8.40) and Zac Weas, who ran a personal best 8.03 time. Bryson Riddick qualified for the 400-meter finals with a time of 48.77, while Ava Nkadi qualified for the 800-meter run (2:18.12).

Three Bulldogs qualified in the men's 800-meter, with Alex Haines (1:55.14), Brock Newsome (1:55.71), and Walker Lezotte (1:56.38) all finishing in the top-seven. Lezotte finished on the podium along with his DMR team of Jackson Core, Quinn Jacquez, and Isaac Teasley for a third place finish (10:18.45), which would be the fourth best time in program history.

Brianna Moore set herself a new personal best with a sixth place finish in the long jump (5.48m) to give the Bulldogs three more points heading into Saturday. Raina Jackson also added four points in the women's shot put, with a fourth-place finish of 13.83 meters.

The Bulldogs will be back in action for the final day of the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. The action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
