02.23.2023 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Track and Field teams will compete in the Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships on February 24-25. The Championships will take place at the Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, V.A.
Last Time Out: Asheville's last meet took place in Birmingham, A.L. on February 11 at the Bulldog Open hosted by Samford University. In the one day event, the Bulldogs racked up three first place finishes in the men's shot put, men's one mile run, and men's 3000 meter run, along with three other podium finishes. The Bulldogs also achieved numerous personal best times at the competition to round out the indoor season.
Coaches Perspective: "Every meet we are continuing to get better and better," said Associate Head Track and Field Coach Adam Puett. "In our most recent meet, we had ninety percent of our athletes run either season bests or personal bests, so we are peaking at the right time. I'm excited about what we will be able to do at the Championships."
Championship Rewind: At the 2022 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships, Asheville finished seventh on the men's and women's side respectively in the competition. The teams fielded a trio of All-Big South honorees along with a pair of indoor school records broken.
All-Big South Honors:Â At the 2022 Championships, the men's distance medley relay team made up of Brock Newsome, Bryson Riddick, Alex Haines, and Adam Hessler earned All-Big South honors and broke an indoor school record. Solomon McDonald (men's shot put) and Claudia Prieto (women's long jump) also earned All-Big South honors. Raina Jackson broke the Asheville indoor record in the women's shot put, which she has since broken again this season at the John Weaver Invitational to open the 2023 season.
