Bulldogs cruise past Sacred Heart, 11-3, for second straight win
02.18.2023 | Baseball
Much like in its victory on Friday, the Bulldog lineup was clicking. All nine members of the starting lineup had a hit and five had multi-hit outings. Michael Groves went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Asheville's No. 4, 5, and 6 hitters in Dylan Bacot, Corbin Lanowitz, and Cameron Johnson all drove in a pair of runs. Finally, Tylan Reece launched his first home run of the season in the victory.
On the mound, senior Ryan Douglas had one of his best outings as a Bulldog. Douglas scattered three hits and two walks, allowed two runs (not earned) and matched a career-high with eight strikeouts on Saturday. Douglas, who got the win, was followed by relievers Justin Honeycutt and Brett Johnson who finished off the win for the Bulldogs.
Asheville wasted little time to crack the scoreboard on Saturday. Bacot drove in Tony Castonguay on an infield single to give the Bulldogs a quick 1-0 lead. A sacrifice fly from Ty Kaufman in the second and a two-run home run by Reece in the fourth staked Douglas to a 4-0 lead.
Sacred Heart would scratch across a pair of unearned runs on Douglas in the sixth. However, the Bulldogs roared back. Lanowitz drove in two runs with a double down the right field line that was just out of the first baseman's reach. That was followed by a wild pitch, RBI singles from Groves and Bacot, and Johnson drove in two more runs with a single. After the seventh, the score read 11-2 Asheville.
Following the big outburst from Asheville, Sacred Heart had runners reach base in each of the final three innings. However, the Bulldogs erased the runners in the seventh and eighth innings with double plays. The Pioneers got a solo home run in the ninth inning, but it proved too little too late and the Bulldogs finished off the 11-3 victory.
Asheville and Sacred Heart will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday. Sunday's matchup is scheduled for a first pitch time of Noon at Greenwood Field.
