Bulldogs drop a close decision on the road at Furman, 2-0
09.17.2022 | Men's Soccer
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team battled but ended up falling to Furman on Saturday night in non-conference action by a score of 2-0.
"Fantastic group effort tonight on the road," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Mick Giordano. "We are battling the injury bug left and right but the group continues to plug forward. The staff challenged our boys to be more attacking in the second half, take more risks and be brave which we certainly embodied. Hats off to their GK and the countless blocked shots they had tonight. The fight shown against a good Furman team was promising again. It will fall our way soon and we found out more answers tonight with questions asked. We just have to continue to believe in our process and brand."
The first 45 minutes of Saturday's match was mainly controlled by the Paladins. Furman totaled 10 shot attempts in the first half. Despite being peppered with offensive chances, the Bulldog defense stood tough and kept the score at 0-0 at the end of the first half.
Furman broke the scoreless stalemate in the 50th minute with a goal from Christian Kraus. Following the Paladin goal, the Bulldogs seemed to ramp up the pressure in effort to tie the score. Asheville totaled 11 shot attempts after Furman netted the match's first goal. Heath Flathau, Sam Presser, and Brendan Herb each tallied two shot attempts, while Dylan Thompson, Jake Kemhadjian, Stewart Patnaud, Conor Behan, and A.J. DeVivo registered attempts as well.
Despite the Bulldogs' best efforts, they did not find the tying goal. The Paladins, though, added some insurance in the 88th minute with a goal from Alfredo Diaz-Santillan to close out the scoring. Freshman goalkeeper A.J. Bengds played well in net for the Bulldogs tallying nine saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs, now 1-6 on the season, will be back in action on Tuesday when they welcome Wofford to Greenwood Field for a non-conference matchup. Kickoff between the Terriers and Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
