ASHEVILLE, N.C. - With the final minutes of the match ticking down, the UNC Asheville men's soccer team tied Tuesday's match, 2-2, against Wofford off the back of Stewart Patnaud's late goal in the 87th minute.
The match started out in the hands of the Terriers when Nikolai Rojel found the back of the net early into the first half. The Bulldogs answered shortly after when Heath Flathau intercepted a pass from the Terriers and delivered the ball to a streaking Sam Presser. With only one man to beat, Presser scored easily, knotting the game up, 1-1.
Wofford, undeterred by the Asheville goal, scored again in the 36th minute off a corner kick header from Bryce Peacock. Wofford held the advantage in shots during the first half, with the majority going wide of the net.
In the second half, the Bulldogs played a more aggressive style of ball, pressing up into Wofford territory in order to tie the game before time expired. Despite the aggression, the teams played evenly with each only getting a few shot attempts.
In the 87th minute, Sam Presser managed to steal the ball away from the Wofford defender and put up a cross for the awaiting Stewart Patnaud, who drilled it into the back of the net for the tie, 2-2.
The Bulldogs, now 1-6-1 on the season, will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome Gardner Webb to Greenwood Field for their first Big South conference matchup of the season. Kickoff for the UNC Asheville Alumni game is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
