ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team won their home opener at Greenwood Field in dominant fashion, defeating VMI 4-1. They remained undefeated to begin the season after a tie at Wofford on Thursday.
Both teams started quietly, each putting up a handful of shots during the first 40 minutes of the game. As the clock began to wind down for the first half, the Bulldogs began to step up the pressure, scoring two goals in quick succession to round out the half.
Taylor Gardner, Asheville's leading goal scorer from last season, continued to put on a show scoring her second goal of the season in the 38th minute, making a sliding shot past the goalkeeper off a cross from Kaiya Boyd. After the first goal, the Bulldogs began to settle in and kept scoring.
Five minutes later, Daysha Chaney scored her first collegiate goal in the final two minutes of the half, collecting the ball off a deflected pass from Taylor Gardner and burying it in the back of the net.
Moving on to the second half, the Bulldogs remained in control for the rest of the game. The combination of Chaney and Gardner proved to be potent, as Chaney scored her second goal of the game to open up the half, finding the net again off a smooth backdoor pass from Gardner.
"She got an injury last year and was out for a majority of the time so for her it's just great." said UNC Asheville Head Coach Andy McNab about Daysha Chaney's first collegiate goals, "She's such a hard worker and both of her goals today were great instinctive finishes. It's just great to see her playing again.
The Bulldogs were not done there, keeping VMI firmly on defense for most of the half. In the 71st minute, Brooklyn Scythes scored her first collegiate goal with a huge right-footed strike from 10 feet behind the penalty box.
A few moments later VMI responded with a goal of their own as Sedona Dancu found the back of the net in the 75th minute. From there, VMI tried to battle back by stepping up the pressure on Asheville, but it was not enough, and Asheville held them off for the win.
The Bulldogs' next game brings them to Charleston, S.C. as they take on their third Southern Conference opponent, The Citadel, in a match-up scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m.
