Mercer blanks the Bulldogs, 6-0

03.05.2022 | Baseball

MACON, Ga. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a 6-0 decision on the road at Mercer on Saturday in the second game of the weekend series.

Asheville did not have much luck in solving the Mercer pitching staff on Saturday as it totaled three hits and five baserunners total in the contest. The three Bulldog hits, which were all singles, came from Ty Kaufman, Dominic Freeberger, and PJ Heintz

Senior Jacob Edwards got the start for the Bulldogs on Saturday. Edwards held the hot-hitting Bear offense to one run on four hits through the first four innings. However, Mercer got to Edwards in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles and a walk plus a three-run home run chased Edwards from the contest as the Bears opened up a 5-0 lead.

Mercer's pitchers kept the Bulldog bats in check and added an insurance run in the eighth to round out all the scoring on Saturday.

Asheville's best scoring threat came in the ninth inning. Tylan Reece led the inning off with a walk. After Reece was caught stealing, Kaufman followed with a single, and Freeberger also reached on a fielding error to give the Bulldogs a pair of runners on with two outs. However, Mercer reliever Avery Stephens got Robbie Burnett to pop out to finish off the 6-0 win.

The series between the Bulldogs and Bears will wrap up on Sunday. The first pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m.
