Bulldogs win series opener over Charleston Southern

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team picked up an 8-6 win over Charleston Southern to open its first home Big South series of the season on Friday. With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 7-13 overall and evened their conference record at 2-2.
Asheville had plenty of contributors to fuel Friday's win. The tandem of Dylan Bacot and Cam Johnson each had two-hit nights, and Bacot also drove in a team-high three runs, while the duo of Ty Kaufman and Robbie Burnett knocked in a pair of runs as well.
On the pitching side, Asheville had five pitchers log innings in the contest. Zeus Ponder made his first career start and allowed four runs on three hits with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Blake Little, who ended up being credited with the win, tossing 2.2 key shutout innings for the Bulldogs in the middle of the game to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. Following Little, Jay Allmer (1.2 innings) and Dominic Freeberger (1.1 innings) finished up the win for the Bulldogs, with Freeberger notching his second save of the season.
Asheville cracked the scoreboard first on Friday thanks to an RBI groundout from Burnett that plated Kaufman. Charleston Southern, however, quickly answered with four runs in the top of the second inning on the power of a solo home run and a key two-run double.
The Buccaneer lead did not last long, though, as Asheville regained the lead in the bottom half of the second. With one out, the Bulldogs hit a single, reached on an error, and drew a walk to load the bases. Freeberger drew a bases-loaded walk to force in one run. Arguably the biggest hit of the game came a batter later as Bacot cleared the bases with a triple to vault the Bulldogs back in front, 5-4. Burnett then drove in Bacot to make the score 6-4 Asheville.
After 10 runs were scored in the game's first two innings, the rest of the game was much more of a pitchers' duel. Each team mustered just two more runs in the final seven innings. CSU slugged a pair of solo home runs to account for its offense, while Kaufman knocked one of Asheville's runs with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and before giving Asheville a key insurance run in the eighth with an RBI single.
The Bulldogs will aim to win its first conference series of the season on Saturday as the same two teams match up again at Greenwood Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Greenwood Field on ESPN+.
