Bulldogs bounce back with a 7-3 win over Longwood
03.19.2022 | Baseball
FARMVILLE, Va. – A day after dropping the series opener to Longwood, 14-3, the UNC Asheville baseball team bounced back with a 7-3 win over the Lancers on Saturday to even the three-game set at a game apiece.
Saturday's win was a true team effort for Asheville. All nine members of Asheville's starting lineup reached base at least once, and eight of the nine tallied hits in the contest. The trio of Dylan Bacot, Tylan Reece, and PJ Heintz all had two-hit afternoons. Leadoff man Ty Kaufman had a stellar day setting the table for the Bulldogs with a single, two runs scored and drove in three runs as well.
On the pitching side, the Bulldogs used just two pitchers to finish off the victory. Ryan Douglas got the start and gave Asheville a solid outing. Douglas worked the first 5.1 innings, allowed three runs on four hits, and matched a season-high with eight strikeouts.
Justin Honeycutt came in to relieve Douglas in the sixth and took it the rest of the way. Honeycutt, who ended up getting his first win of 2022, tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, scattered three
hits, and struck out six.
The Bulldogs did not have much luck against Longwood starter Kevin Warunek. Warunek shut out the Bulldogs through the first six innings, which allowed the Lancer offense to build a 3-0 lead.
However, the game seemed to change when the Lancers went to their bullpen. Fueled by six hits and a Longwood error, the Bulldogs sent 10 men to the plate in the seventh to suddenly vault ahead, 6-3. Michael Groves, Heintz, Kaufman, and Dominic Freeberger all had run-producing hits in the big seventh inning for the Bulldogs.
Asheville tacked on an insurance run in the ninth thanks to an RBI double from Bacot to make it 7-3 Bulldogs. The four-run cushion proved to be more than enough for Honeycutt as he finished the win by striking out two of the final three Longwood hitters.
The series finale is set for Sunday afternoon on ESPN+. Sunday's first pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Farmville.
