Gardner-Webb tops Asheville, 89-77

02.05.2022 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team dropped an 89-77 decision to Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon in Big South action at Kimmel Arena. The loss moved Asheville's record to 7-15 overall and 2-9 in league play.

The Bulldogs' 77 points scored on Saturday marked the most for the team against any Division I opponent this season. A game after scoring a season-high 33 points, Nadiria Evans followed up with a 28-point effort on Saturday. Kai Carter recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Jordaynia Ivie finished the contest in double figures with 10 points. Amanda Blake also had a stellar day crashing the boards as she tied Carter with 11 rebounds on the day.

"I was proud of how we took care of the ball," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "It was a point of emphasis for us coming into this game. We did have some turnovers at some bad times, but overall, we were proud of the improvement in that area. Rebounding-wise, it evened up somewhat by the end of the game, but I wished that we were a little more consistent on the glass throughout the game. I thought they got some offensive rebounds that we needed to get at key moments but weren't able to come up with them."

Both teams had no issue putting up points in the opening quarter as 42 points were scored in the first 10 minutes. Asheville matched Gardner-Webb's production from beyond the arc (3-for-5) and free throw line (3-for-4), but the Runnin' Bulldogs grabbed five more offensive rebounds in the frame that turned into six points. Those six points were Gardner-Webb's lead after one quarter, 24-18.

Asheville kept battling in the second quarter. A three-point play from Ivie tied the score at 34 with 2:42 to go in the half. However, Gardner-Webb closed the opening half on a 12-5 run to build its lead back to seven points, 46-39.

Gardner-Webb kept adding to its lead when the two teams came back to the floor for the second half. The Runnin' Bulldogs saw their lead grow to as many as 19 points in the final couple minutes of the third quarter. Asheville kept battling, however, and outscored their opponent in the fourth quarter. The double-digit Gardner-Webb still held up as they finished off the 89-77 victory.

Asheville and Gardner-Webb will match up again on Monday in Boiling Springs, N.C. This game, which was initially scheduled for January 11 but was postponed due to CoVID-19 protocols, is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off, and the contest can be seen on ESPN+.
