Gardner-Webb uses a late run to down Asheville, 80-68

02.07.2022 | Women's Basketball

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team faced off against Gardner-Webb for the second time in three days Monday evening in Boiling Springs, N.C. In a back-and-forth contest that saw the lead change hands 17 times, the Runnin' Bulldogs put together a late run to pick up the 80-68 win.

"Great competitive game except from the free throw line," said Head Coach Honey Brown afterward. "I am proud of our fight and determination on the road. We needed a few stops and rebounds in the second half that could have made a difference. Now we build on today and get ready for Thursday."

Fifth-year senior Nadiria Evans led the charge for Asheville as she finished with a game-high 30 points on a 12-for-22 effort from the field to go with five assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Jordaynia Ivie matched her career-high with 13 points in the contest, while Kai Carter chipped in 10 points of her own to go with a team-high seven rebounds.

With her 30-point outburst on Monday, Evans became the program's all-time scoring leader in the Division I era. Evans, who has now scored 1,705 points during her time as a Bulldog, surpassed Vicki Giffin and her 1,703 points that she put up in an Asheville uniform from 1993-97. Now only Shelia Ford (2,442 points – 1980-84) and Kim Duncan (1,975 points – 1981-85) rank ahead of Evans on the school's all-time scoring list.

Asheville seemed to have a spark from the opening tip on Monday. Led by 11 points from Evans, the Bulldogs put together a 13-2 run at one point in the opening frame to gain the early advantage. Gardner-Webb knocked down a few shots in the final minutes to cut the Bulldog lead down to six, 19-13, after one frame.

Both teams started the second quarter sluggishly. Eventually, Gardner-Webb started to click, knocking down six of its 12 field goal attempts in the frame. Eight more points from Evans, along with made buckets from Carter, Ivie, and Abigail Wilson, supplied enough offense for the Bulldogs to maintain a lead at halftime, 33-32.

The back-and-forth nature of the contest did not change when action resumed for the second half. Asheville and Gardner-Webb seemed to match each other point for point as no lead in the second half grew to more than one possession for much of the last 20 minutes.

The tide of the game seemed to shift with a little over four minutes to play in regulation. Following a steal and a made layup from Evans, the score was tied at 66. Gardner-Webb then closed out the game with a 14-2 run to finish the 80-68 win. A key in Gardner-Webb's late run was its ability to knock down shots from the free throw line. As a team, the Runnin' Bulldogs knocked down seven free throws in the final minutes and finished the night with 30 free throw attempts compared to just nine for Asheville.

Asheville, now 7-16 overall and 2-10 in Big South play, will be back in action Thursday night when it welcomes Hampton to Kimmel Arena. Thursday's game, which will tip at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+, will be the program's Breast Cancer Awareness Game, and fans are encouraged to wear pink as the Bulldogs support a worthy cause.
