Bulldogs rally in the second half but fall short to Hampton
02.10.2022 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team battled back from double-digit deficits a few times in a contest Thursday evening against Hampton at Kimmel Arena, but it was the Lady Pirates that came away with the 75-58 victory.
Kai Carter led Asheville on the scoresheet and on the glass Thursday with 16 points and seven rebounds. Jordaynia Ivie added nine points, and Nadiria Evans netted eight in limited action. Facilitating the Bulldog offense, for the most part, was Faith Adams, who matched a career-high with six assists.
"I was disappointed in how we played at the beginning of the game," said Head Coach Honey Brown afterward. "We're better than that and have played better than that recently. After we put together some back-to-back tough games, I thought we would get off to a better start. I'm proud of how resilient we were in trying to make a run and come back. But it wasn't enough. We made a few errors down the stretch that allowed them to build their lead back up, and we couldn't make that up."
Hampton was very efficient offensively to begin the contest scoring 13 of the first 17 points. The Lady Pirates really played well down low as 10 of those 13 points came in the paint. Leading by 11 after one frame, Hampton continued to build its lead to as many as 21 points with 5:46 to go in the half. Asheville's offense, however, started to click a bit better in the second. With six different players netting points, the Bulldogs upped their shooting percentage to 42.9. Even with the improved offense, Hampton outscored Asheville, 18-15, and led 38-24 at the halftime break.
When the game resumed, the Bulldogs came out rolling, netting eight of the first 10 points to quickly cut Hampton's lead to eight, 40-32. Hampton answered back, though, and built its lead back up to 14, heading to the fourth, 52-38.
Asheville had one more good run in it. With the score reading 58-40 Hampton, the Bulldogs reeled off an 11-0 run to get the deficit down to seven points with 5:26 to go after Maliyah Lockett hit a jump shot in the paint. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Hampton knocked down its free throws (13-for-16 in the fourth quarter) and did not make enough mistakes to allow Asheville to get any closer as the Lady Pirates notched their second win in a row, 75-58.
Asheville will have a quick turnaround and face the Lady Pirates again on Saturday in Hampton, Va. Tip-off for that contest is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
