Carter scores career-high 27 points, but Bulldogs fall at Hampton

02.12.2022 | Women's Basketball

HAMPTON, Va. – Junior Kai Carter scored a career-high 27 points to go with 10 rebounds to lead the UNC Asheville women's basketball team in its game Saturday at Hampton. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were outlasted by the Lady Pirates by a score of 61-52.

Carter's career day was also a very efficient one. The Atlanta, Georgia native went 8-for-14 from the field and knocked down 9-for-10 shots from the free throw line. Jordaynia Ivie matched her career-high with 13 points on a 5-for-9 day from the field, while Abigail Wilson and Mallory Bruce chipped in seven and five points, respectively.

"Unfortunately, we had another disappointing start to the game, which gave them some momentum," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "Really proud of our team's resilience most of second half especially in the fourth quarter. We were right there at the end to give ourselves a chance. Great game by Kai Carter today."

Asheville posted one of its better halves of the season in terms of shooting percentage to open Saturday's contest. The Bulldogs went 9-of-18 from the field and shot 3-for-6 from 3-point range. However, Asheville had issues with turnovers. The Bulldogs committed 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes compared to six for Hampton. Hampton used these extra chances to attempt 12 more field goals in the half. These additional opportunities proved vital to Hampton as it led at the half, 28-22.

The Bulldogs' offense cooled off to begin the second half, allowing the Lady Pirates to build their lead further. Asheville saw the deficit grow to as many as 14 points in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, 48-34.

Asheville, however, did not give up and mounted a late rally to put the pressure back on Hampton. After a 3-pointer from Bruce, the score was 50-49 Lady Pirates with 4:19 to go in regulation. With the Bulldogs back within one possession, Hampton was able to knock down a couple of critical shots and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to fuel an 11-3 run to finish out the 61-52 win.

Asheville will be back in action Tuesday when it visits Radford for another Big South matchup. Tip-off on Tuesday is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
