ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will be back in action on Tuesday when it visits Radford for another Big South contest. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Highlanders is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville battled back from a double-digit deficit to get within one point in its game last Saturday at Hampton. However, the Lady Pirates persevered and picked up the 61-52 victory. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 7-18 overall and 2-12 in Big South play.
Kai with a Career-High – A bright spot for Asheville on Saturday came from Kai Carter. The junior from Atlanta, Georgia, netted a career-high 27 points to go with 10 rebounds. Carter, who ranks second on the Bulldogs in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per contest, has been incredibly productive in 2022 as she is averaging near a double-double (17.1 PPG, 8.1 RPG) in 13 games.
Fine outing by a freshman – Freshman Jordaynia Ivie also had a productive day on Saturday, matching a career-high with 13 points. Like Carter, Ivie has stepped up her game in the new year averaging 9.1 points per game. Ivie also ranks second on the team in shooting percentage (44.9), 3-pointers made (10), assists (27), and steals (20).
Rivalry vs. Radford – As two of the longer-standing members of the Big South, there is no shortage of history between the Highlanders and Bulldogs. These two league rivals have matched up over 80 times, including 13 times in the Big South Tournament. Radford holds the edge in the all-time series, 57-26. However, Asheville has come away with the win in three of the last five meetings, including a 69-60 win in Kimmel Arena on December 29.
Scouting Radford – Radford comes into Tuesday's matchup riding a seven-game losing streak. The Highlanders, which are 5-18 overall and 1-11 in conference play, are led by Bridget Birkhead. Birkhead leads Radford in scoring average (10.6 PPG) and ranks fifth among Big South players with 45 3-pointers made.
