Baseball readies for a midweek matchup at No. 16 Tennessee

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will face its toughest test of the young season on Wednesday when it pays a visit to No. 16 Tennessee. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Volunteers is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on SEC Network Plus.
Last Time Out – Asheville dropped three games on the road at Virginia Tech last weekend by scores of 17-3, 8-1, and 10-4 to open the 2022 season.
Senior steps up in first outing of 2022 – A highlight for Asheville during its first series of the season came in game two from senior Jacob Edwards. Edwards held the hot-hitting Virginia Tech offense to one run (not earned) on five hits and struck out eight Hokies in five innings of work.
Fine first weekend by a freshman – Another bright spot for the Bulldogs in Blacksburg came from Corbin Lanowitz. Lanowitz, who transferred to Asheville from Boston College, collected three hits in eight at-bats on the series. Furthermore, Lanowitz was the lone Bulldog to pick up at least one hit in each of the three games.
Vs. Nationally-Ranked Opponent – Wednesday's game will mark the first time the Bulldogs will play a nationally-ranked team since 2019 when they also played Tennessee when it was ranked No. 21 in the nation. Asheville has knocked off a ranked team before, with the last occurring in 2016 when it edged out No. 11 North Carolina by a score of 3-2.
About Tennessee – The 16th-ranked Volunteers are coming off an impressive three-game sweep of Georgia Southern over the weekend. Tennessee outscored the Eagles by a score of 33-3 in the three games. Tennessee boasts a talented squad as it currently has three players (Blade Tidwell - #13, Jordan Beck - #28, Drew Gilbert - #82) ranked in the top 100 prospects for the 2022 MLB Draft.
