Swimming & Diving continues to roll at the CCSA Championships

02.18.2022 | Women's Swimming & Diving

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville swimming & diving team continued its fantastic showing at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships on Friday. Following the third day of the Championship meet, the Bulldogs sit in third place with 1,064.5 points.

Headlining the performances by the Bulldogs Thursday was Mikaela Fullerton achieving an NCAA 'B' Cut in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.55. Furthermore, the Bulldogs picked up three silver medals, set one school and one freshman record during Friday's action in Lynchburg.

"I would like to thank my family, teammates, and coaches for their constant support," said senior Anna Nabors as she closed out her career as a Bulldog by earning two 'A' finals and one 'B' final this week. "The 200 fly is my favorite race ever, and I couldn't imagine a better way to end my swimming career. I am so grateful for my fellow flyers and the ones who came before me. These have truly been the best four years of my life, and I am so proud to be a Bulldog!"

Morning Session Recap
Like it has done in the first two days of the CCSA Championships, Asheville came out ready to roll to begin Thursday's prelim session. 11 Bulldogs qualified for the finals later in the day (8 A, 1 B, 2 C) to go along with four lifetime best swims and five others that were season-bests.

Just like in Thursday's early action, a freshman put her name in the record books for Asheville. Grace Adams not only put herself in the 'A' final of the 100 back with a time of 55.71 but also broke the freshman record for the event.

In the other prelim races, the trio of Mikaela Fullerton (1:02.13 – A), Abby Parks (1:03.88 – A), and Amelia Ham (1:06.98) all moved on to the finals in the 100 breast. Perhaps the most impressive team feat of the morning came in the 200 fly as all five Bulldogs that competed advanced to the finals.

Rounding out the action in the morning was the 1-meter diving completion. Freshman Morgan Coughlen led the way for the Bulldogs, finishing 13th with 214.95 points. The 13th-place finish marks the highest a Bulldog diver has placed at the CCSA Championships. Jade Canady, who achieved the same feat in the 3-meter completion on Wednesday, 18th, with a point total of 174.55, and Jessica Brock placed 24th with 123.15 points.

Evening Session Recap

Fullerton's NCAA 'B' Cut came in Thursday's finals of the 100 breaststroke. Fullerton narrowly missed on becoming the first conference champion in Bulldog history by .02 seconds behind Florida Gulf Coast's Petra Halmai (1:00.53). Fullerton's time, however, did best the school record that she set last November at the Fall Frenzy Invitational (1:01.19).

The other two podium finishes for the Bulldogs came in the 100 back and 200 fly. Nora Segurola Larrinaga matched her own school record of 54.66 in the 100 back that ranked second in the field. Freshman Riley Edmundson, meanwhile, finished second in the 200 fly to notch her first medal of this week.

Some other standout swims for Asheville in the evening came from Abby Parks and Caitlin Hefner. Parks set a new lifetime best in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.40. Hefner, meanwhile, did the same with her split in the 800 freestyle relay.

The final day of the CCSA Championships will begin with the prelims at 10 a.m. on Saturday, which will air on the
Big South Network. Wrapping up the day will be the finals at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
