Swimming & Diving continues to rewrite records on day two of the CCSA Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville swimming and diving team continued its record-breaking season on day two of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships on Thursday from the Liberty Natatorium. Asheville broke the school record in all five of the events that it competed in on the day.

After day two, the Bulldogs remained in third place in the team standings with 726.5 points trailing only Liberty (968.5 points) and Florida Gulf Coast (797 points).

Morning Session Recap
Much like they did in the morning session on Wednesday, the Bulldogs put themselves in a wonderful position to score big points in the evening with their performances in Thursday's prelims. A pair of school and freshman records were broken on the morning to go along with nine season-best outings and seven lifetime best swims. With these outings, 14 Bulldogs qualified for the evening races (8 A, 3 B, 3 C).

The 100 fly was perhaps the most impressive for the Bulldogs as four swimmers put themselves in the 'A' final. Not only that, but three different Bulldogs broke the school record of 55.66 held by Madison Rogan (2019 CCSA Championships). Freshman Chloe McDonald led the trio with a time of 55.31 and, by doing so, set new school and freshman records in the event. Fellow Bulldogs Addison Wright (55.49) and Sam Kershner (55.50) were right behind her.

The other record-breaking outing for Bulldogs came in the 400 IM when freshman Riley Edmundson notched the fastest ever time by a Bulldog, 4:25.14. Edmundson, who placed fourth in the field in the prelims, would be joined in the 'A' final by fellow freshman Bulldog Julie Lahiff and her time of 4:29.97

Wrapping up the final prelim of the morning was the 200 free. Two lifetime best swims led the way for Asheville, and those came from Nora Segurola Larrinaga (1:52.23) and Caitlin Hefner (1:52.85). Those two performances were low enough to move to the 'A' final. Kylie Johnson (1:55.02) and Delaney Carlton (1:53.18) both moved on to the 'B' final, and Jessie Frank (1:54.5) did the same for the 'C' final.

Evening Session Recap
The evening session was bookended by a pair of school-record performances in the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay. Leading things off, the foursome of Larrinaga, Parks, Frank, and Carlton teamed up to clock in at 1:31.27. And to close out the evening, the quartet of Larrinaga, Mikaela Fullerton, Kershner, and Parks swam a time of 3:41.40. Both times, which were nearly two full seconds faster than the previous records, earned Asheville second-place finishes in those events, which brings its podium total on the week to five.

Two more Asheville swimmers put their names into the record books between the relays. Larrinaga edged out a new school record in the 200 free by .18 seconds over the old mark held by Morgan Rulevich (1:50.88) with a time of 1:50.70. Kershner, meanwhile, did the same in the 100 fly topping the record that McDonald broke in the morning, clocking in at 55.22. Asheville also showed excellent depth in the 100 fly, with three of the top six finishes in that event.

"I'm so thankful for my teammates and the butterfly squad," Kershner said afterward. "I wouldn't have done as well if it wasn't for the practices we got through together this year. I'm also really thankful for my family watching at home; I miss them very much and I know they wish they could be here. Lastly, thanks to my coaches for helping me through the ups and downs in swimming, school, and life. I'm honored to be a Bulldog."

In the evening session, the Bulldogs tallied six lifetime-best swims to go along with all of their podium/record-breaking performances.

The CCSA Championships will resume with the prelims at 10 a.m. on Friday, which will air on the
Big South Network. Wrapping up the day will be the finals at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
