LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville swimming and diving team posted several standout performances to kick off the 2022 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships on Wednesday from the Liberty Natatorium. After one day of action, the Bulldogs sit in third place with 319 points in the team standings behind only the co-conference champions from a season ago, Liberty and Florida Gulf Coast.
Overall, the Bulldogs saw two school records broken, achieved two NCAA 'B' cuts, logged over a dozen lifetime-best swims, and had several more season-best performances on the day.
Morning Session Recap
Asheville put itself in a fantastic position for Wednesday's finals during the morning session. Overall, the Bulldogs saw two NCAA 'B' cuts, one school record broken, 10-lifetime bests, and four season-best swims. Furthermore, the Bulldogs qualified 12 swimmers for the finals later in the day.
The school record that fell early came in the 50-yard freestyle prelims when Delaney Carlton finished second in the field, clocking in at 22.72. The mark, which was one of Asheville NCAA 'B' performances, was slightly faster than another Bulldog as Abby Parks was right behind her teammate with a time of 22.74. That time was also qualified as an NCAA 'B' mark.
Carlton and Parks both qualified in the 50y free 'A' final, while fellow Bulldog Jessie Frank did so in the 'B' final with a time of 23.81. Asheville also had five swimmers advance in the 200-yard individual medley. Addison Wright (2:07.65) and Amelia Ham (2:08.09) both set new lifetime-bests, while Julie Lahiff logged a season-low time (2:09.04) to move on to the 'B' final. Sam Kershner (2:09.35) and Alexis Walker (2:10.78) did the same in the 'C' Final.
The 500-yard freestyle saw three Bulldogs qualify to the 'A' final in Caitlin Hefner (5:02.16), Grace Adams (5:02.64), and Kylie Johnson (5:02.62). Gaby Shenot (5:10.70) also qualified for the evening's 'C' final.
In the 3-meter diving event, Asheville had three student-athletes compete. Jade Canady led the group placing 17th with a point total of 195.70. Morgan Coughlen (20th – 188.10 points) and Jessica Brock (24th – 109.10) rounded out the Bulldog diving point totals from day one.
Evening Session Recap
Asheville picked up right where it left off in the morning session in the evening. The Bulldogs didn't waste any time tallying another school record as the quartet of Nora Segurola Larrinaga, Mikaela Fullerton, Carlton, and Parks clocked in at a time of 1:40.55 in the 200 medley relay. This time eclipsed the old record of 1:41.47 set at last year's Championships by Larrinaga, Fullerton, Wright, and Carlton.
The stellar swims kept rolling in for Asheville, with the 500-yard freestyle up next. Shenot got things started by logging the top time in the 'C' final (5:04.69), and Hefner capped the event off by placing second with a time of 4:57.46 in the 'A' final. In doing so, Hefner became the first Bulldog to earn a medal in the 500 free.
"I am honored to be UNC Asheville's first medalist in the 500 free, and I could not have done it without the support of my teammates," Hefner said afterward. "They helped me get into the right headspace to race hard and have fun after a less than ideal preliminary session. I couldn't be prouder to be a part of this team. Go Bulldogs!"
Following the 200 IM where Kershner (2:06.14) and Ham (2:06.89) both set new lifetime-best swims, the evening concluded with the 50-yard free finals. Jessie Frank set a new personal-best time of 23.72 to get things rolling before Carlton (2nd – 22.73) and Parks (4th – 22.95) logged two of the top four times in the event. For Carlton, her evening time of 22.73 was just .01 seconds off, matching her record-breaking performance in the morning of 22.72.
