ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team looks to remain perfect this weekend, hosting North Florida on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) and Belmont on Sunday (3:30 p.m.).
Fast Start
The Bulldogs enter the weekend 4-0 on the young season, scoring victories over Emmanuel (6-1) and UNCG (4-3) last week. Leo Bierbaum was a crucial part of Asheville's wins, going 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with Jon Bran Reid. For his efforts, Bierbaum was named the Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
A look at North Florida
The Ospreys have had four matches so far in 2022, but are just 1-3. Their losses came to tough opponents in Florida State, Miami and South Florida, with their win being a 7-0 sweep of College of Charleston in Jacksonville. Jonas Hartenstein and PJ Kotan have split time at the No. 1 and 2 flights, with Hartenstein posting a record of 3-1 overall (1-1 at No. 1). Hartenstein and Jorge Nunez have competed twice as a duo at the No. 1 flight, going 1-1 in those matches.
A look at Belmont
The Bruins, meanwhile, have gotten off to a very strong 3-0 start, topping Lee, Lipscomb and Chattanooga. Arthur Toledo has gone 1-1 at the No. 1 flight while Tomas Luis is 0-1 at that spot, but 2-0 in No. 2 singles action. Luis and Diego Castro have yet to score a No. 2 doubles win, but Toledo and Jack Randall are 2-1 at the No. 2 doubles flight.
Attendance Update
At this time, attendance at all Asheville tennis matches is limited to students with a valid OneCard. All attendees must show proof of vaccination and wear a mask at all times.
