12.07.2022 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to Furman Wednesday night (Dec. 7) by a score of 65-64.

"Overall I thought we executed some things that we wanted to execute, we just have to shoot the ball from three-point range a little bit better," said head coach Honey Brown.

The teams battled back and forth through the first quarter, trading buckets and stops with Furman leading after 10 minutes 18-15.

The Bulldogs took a 38-33 lead to the half after a strong finish to the half, battling back from a deficit as big as six in the frame. Furman led 30-24 with four minutes to play in the half, before the Bulldogs rallied to take a 31-30 over the next 90 seconds. The Bulldogs scored seven points while holding Furman to just three in the final two and a half minutes to take the lead to the break.

The third quarter was a battle from start to finish, with the Bulldogs extending their lead to as many as nine in the frame. Furman rallied in the final few minutes of the period to cut the Bulldogs lead to just five headed to the fourth.

Asheville got the lead back up to five early in the fourth, before the teams played to a 62-62 deadlock with under four minutes to play. Abigail Wilson scored a bucket off an assist from Jordaynia Ivie with just over three minutes to go, before Grace van Rij tied the game at 64 off an assist from Sydney James with just under three minutes to play. The teams traded empty possessions and timeouts into the final 10 seconds, when van Rij sank one of two free throws to ultimately bring the game to its final score.

McKinley Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Jordaynia Ivie also added 10 points in the game. Faith Adams chipped in nine points, while Nycerra Minnis added eight and Mallory Bruce had seven. Abigail Wilson contributed six points, while Jamaya Blanks had four, Dakota McCaughan had three and Jamia Blake also had two.

"Everybody was ready for their shot tonight," said Brown. "We're going to be balanced most of the season, unless someone gets super hot, but it's what I expect out of this group."

Bruce led the rebounding effort with seven rebounds in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter, Wilson and Blanks each had four. Ivie and Minnis each had three, while Adams, Blake and Jada Brigman each had two and McCaughan also had one. Ivie dished out a team-high five assists in the game, while Brigman had two and six others each had one. Brooks-Sumpter registered a team-high two steals, while four other Bulldogs each had one. Bruce recorded the lone block in the game for Asheville.

The Bulldogs (4-3) return to the hardwood on Sunday (Dec. 11) to take on No. 7 Virginia Tech on the road. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. from Blacksburg, Va., with video (ACC Network Extra) and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
