Bulldogs fall in four sets to Charleston Southern

11.04.2022 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-14) to Charleston Southern on Friday night from the Justice Center.

Stat Standouts – Lexy Cole led the way for Asheville on the scoresheet on Friday with a team-high 16 points. Cole tallied nine kills, two aces, three solo blocks, and four block assists. Nina Finderle (11 points), Makenzi Searcy (10.5 points), and Ryann Allison (10.5 points) also scored in double figures for the Bulldogs.

First Set – Charleston Southern built a six-point lead on Asheville (15-9) at the media timeout. The Bulldogs would battle back though and get the deficit trimmed down to one point, 22-21, late in the first set. However, CSU would go on to score three of the next four points to finish off the set, 25-22.

Second Set – Like in the opening set, the Buccaneers built up a sizable lead on Asheville. Charleston Southern led by as many as eight points in the second. However, this time the Bulldogs not only came all the way back to tie the score but also took the lead and eventually the set, 25-23. Finderle (five kills), Cole (four kills), and Searcy (three kills) were key in the Bulldog comeback combining for 12 kills on 16 attempts.

Third Set – With the match tied at a set a piece, both teams jostled for momentum in the third stanza. Asheville turned to its defense with five total blocks in third. However, Charleston Southern's Peyton Thompson was on fire with 11 kills on 16 attempts with just two errors (.562 hitting percentage). Thanks in large part to Thompson's hot hitting, the Buccaneers won the third set, 25-18.

Fourth Set – In what proved to be the final set of Friday's match, the score was knotted at 8-8 early on. Charleston Southern, however, rattled off a 13-0 run to seize control of the set. That big hole for the Bulldogs proved too large to overcome and the Buccaneers won the set, 25-14.

Next Up – The Bulldogs, now 4-19 overall and 1-12 in Big South play, will be back in action on Saturday when they host Presbyterian in their final home match of the season. The start time for that matchup, which will also serve as the team's Senior Day, is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
