Last Time Out – Asheville's last game was on Sunday at Georgia State. Despite 20-plus point performances from Drew Pember and Tajion Jones, the Panthers came away with the 74-68 win. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 3-2 on the season.
Pember picks up where he left off – Pember has picked up right where he left off from last season. Pember ranks among the top five in the Big South several key statistical categories including points per game (2nd – 21.6), rebounds per game (1st – 8.4), field goal percentage (5th – .493), free throw percentage (2nd - .842), steals per game (7th – 1.4), blocked shots (1st – 14).
Bulldogs Beyond the Arc – Asheville enters Saturday's game ranking among the top 30 programs in the country in both 3-pointers made per game (28th – 10.2) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (22nd – 25.0). Jones (16), Fletcher Abee (11), and Pember (10) have all connected on 10 or more 3-pointers through five games in 2022-23.
Jones continues to move up the scoring charts – With 21 points on Sunday, Jones moved into eighth place on UNC Asheville's all-time scoring list with 1,544 points. Jones needs just four more points to move into seventh place on the list. Furthermore, Jones is within sight of becoming Asheville's all-time leader in 3-pointers made as he needs to make 20 more threes to surpass Josh Kohn's (1992-96) 296 makes from beyond the arc.
About Western Carolina – After dropping its first two games of the season to Georgia (68-55) and Maryland (71-51), the Catamounts have rattled off four straight victories against Brescia (112-45), McNeese State (88-69), Lamar (98-91), Lindenwood (90-88). A strength for WCU this season has been its ability to knock down 3-pointers. The Catamounts rank fourth nationally in terms of 3-pointers made per game (12.0 per game).
Series Rewind vs. Western Carolina - Western Carolina holds the edge in the all-time series against the Bulldogs, 32-24. However, the Bulldogs hold a 10-9 edge in games played in Asheville. The Bulldogs will look for back-to-back wins against Western Carolina for the first time since 2007-2008 after they upended the Catamounts, 73-72, in Cullowhee, N.C. Furthermore, the last three games between these two rivals have been decided by a total of four points.
