Bulldogs drop a three-set match Friday at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a three-set match (25-22, 27-25, 25-15) on the road at Campbell on Friday night in Big South action.
Stat Standouts – Asheville was led on the scoresheet on Friday by Makenzi Searcy. Searcy not only finished with a team-high 11 kills but also added 12 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Fellow freshman Lydia Pate had an efficient evening with eight kills on 24 attacks with no errors (.333 hitting percentage). Ona Elkins also had a double-double with 14 assists and 11 digs. Rounding out the stat leaders for Asheville was Giulia Rodrigues, who finished with a team-high 15 digs in the three-set contest.
1st Set – Campbell was able to build a five-point lead (11-6) in the opening set of Friday's match. Asheville, however, battled back to tie the score at 17. The Bulldogs and Camels would be tied at 18, 19, and 22 as well. With the score knotted at 22, Campbell went on a 3-0 run to finish off the opening frame, 25-22.
2nd Set – Being down by a set, the Bulldogs played well in the second. Offensively, Asheville attacked at a .279 clip with 14 kills. Searcy (four kills), Pate (three kills), and Bahar Kurtulus (three kills) kept Asheville close to the Camels. At 14 different points in the second set, the score was tied. Much like in the first, however, Campbell was able to string a couple points together late to take the frame, 27-25.
3rd Set – A Campbell service error in the middle of the frame made the score 14-12 Camels. However, Campbell would score 11 of the next 14 points to finish off the set and match with a 25-15 victory.
Next Up – Asheville, now 4-21 overall and 1-14 in conference play, will close out its season on Saturday afternoon when it visits High Point. First serve for that contest is set for 2 p.m.
