Bulldogs go the distance against Charleston Southern in loss

10.08.2022 | Women's Volleyball

CHARLESTON, S.C. - After dropping the first two sets against Charleston Southern, the UNC Asheville volleyball team looked to reverse sweep the Bucs by winning two sets in a row before narrowly falling in the fifth set. Despite the outstanding play from Nina Finderle and Giulia Rodrigues, the Bulldogs were unable to complete the comeback and fell 3-2 (25-19, 25-17, 17-25, 13-25, 15-13).

Stat Standouts - As mentioned earlier, Finderle had her second great performance in two days, finishing with a .667 hitting percentage, 12 kills, and two blocks. She led the team in hitting efficiency and tied in kills with Pelin Aksoy. Makenzi Searcy and Lexy Cole displayed their defensive skills in this match, with Cole blocking 10 shots and Searcy blocking six. Giulia Rodrigues and M.K. Roberts also had great defensive games, each earning 18 digs, respectively.

First Set - The Bulldogs got off to a slow offensive start, hitting .139 in the first set. Despite a slow start offensively, the Bulldogs held a one-point lead in the first frame, bolstered by three kills by Searcy. With the score tied 14-14, the Bucs swung two three-point runs to go up 20-16. The Bulldogs could not overcome the deficit and lost the set, 25-19.

Second Set - Asheville jumped out to an early three-point lead in the first frame, 7-4, before the Bucs made a three point swing to tie the match at 8-8. From there, the Bucs slowly pulled away to establish a 22-16 lead. The three kills from Aksoy in this set were not enough and Charleston Southern took the set, 25-17.

Third Set - The Bulldogs continued to progress offensively each set, this time establishing an early lead and holding onto it the entire set. Finderle was perfect in this set, going four-for-four in her attack attempts. Asheville led 20-16 before a kill from Aksoy and a block by Cole sealed the set for the Bulldogs, 25-17.

Fourth Set - The Bulldogs had one of their more dominant sets in a while, putting their foot on the gas after an early 5-5 tie to take a 21-11 lead. Six Bulldogs earned kills in this match, with Aksoy and Finderle hitting three each. Asheville went on to win the set, 25-13, tying the match 2-2 and sending it to a fifth set.

Fifth Set - The final set was a close battle between the two teams, with Asheville quickly picking up a 5-1 lead off the back of a kill from Searcy and two blocks from Cole. The Bucs made up for the deficit by capitalizing on some Asheville attack errors, tying the match 12-12. After a kill from the Bucs, they went up 14-13 and made an excellent serve that barely clipped the backline of the court, winning the set 15-13.

Next Up - The Bulldogs, now 3-13 and 0-6 in conference play, will return home to the Justice Center next Friday to take on High Point in a match scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
