Bulldogs sweep USC Upstate for first Big South win

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up its first Big South win of the season Friday night as it swept USC Upstate (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) at the Justice Center.
Stat Standouts – Asheville received stellar contributions from several players on Friday to fuel the victory. Freshman Avery Loeback had her best performance as a Bulldog to date with 10 kills, no attack errors on 19 attempts for a .526 hitting percentage. Lexy Cole led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points thanks to six kills, three solo blocks, and four block assists. Finally, Makenzi Searcy nearly had a double-double with nine kills and 13 digs. Giulia Rodrigues paced Asheville defensively with 17 digs, while M.K. Roberts had 10 digs of her own to go with three aces.
Set 1 – The opening set was the most back-and-forth frame of the evening with six lead changes to go along with 12 tied scores. One of these ties occurred at 22-22 after an Asheville attack error. However, the Bulldogs would score three of the next four points on a kill from Nina Finderle, an ace from Lindsay Springer, and a kill from Loeback to take the set, 25-23.
Set 3 – Up two sets to none going into the third, Asheville kept the pressure on Upstate. However, the Bulldogs turned up the intensity defensively and it showed with five total blocks in the frame. One of those blocks came via Finderle and Lydia Pate to finish off the three-set victory for Asheville, 25-17.
Next Up – Asheville will be back in action next Friday and Saturday when it hosts Charleston Southern and Presbyterian at the Justice Center. Friday's match will get underway at 6 p.m., while Saturday's is set for a 2 p.m. start time.

The Bulldogs scored not only the first five points in the frame but tallied nine of the first 11 points. Several different Bulldogs fueled the team's .438 hitting percentage in the second with the tandem of Searcy (five kills) and Loeback (four kills) leading the way.
