Bulldogs fall in close match against Gardner-Webb

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Despite some admirable performances by the Bulldog underclassman, the UNC Asheville volleyball team was defeated by Gardner-Webb Thursday evening, 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-21).
Stat Standouts - Lexy Cole and Giulia Rodrigues led the way for the Bulldogs, with Cole notching five kills, three-and-a-half blocks, and a .400 hitting percentage, while Rodrigues collected 21 digs as the libero. This is Rodrigues' fifth match with over 20 digs and she ranks fourth in the Big South in digs with 317 on the season. Three Asheville freshmen played well offensively, with Ryann Allison, Avery Loeback and Makenzi Searcy leading the team in kills. Allison had a career night, cracking a team high seven kills, while Loeback and Searcy each hit six of their own.Â

Second Set - Gardner-Webb took control in the second set, leading for the entire game. Down 18-12, another service ace by Elkins and kills by Loeback and Cole allowed the Bulldogs to bring the lead down to 21-19. Unfortunately, a comeback like the previous set was not in the cards and Gardner-Webb took the set, 25-20.
Third Set - The two teams played closely in the final set, with 14 ties and seven lead changes occurring in the third set. Great play from Allison and Loeback kept the Bulldogs close throughout the third. With the score tied 19-19, Gardner-Webb rattled off a 6-2 run to close out the set and match, 25-21.Â
Next Up - The Bulldogs, now 3-18 and 0-11 in conference play, will take the floor again tomorrow in the Justice Center when they face off against USC Upstate in a match scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.

However, Asheville battled back, making a three-point run and then a five-point run to take the lead, 24-22. Ona Elkins sparked the run with two service aces and led the Bulldogs with 12 assists.
