ROCK HILL, S.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell in straight sets to Winthrop (25-18, 25-9, 25-16) on Saturday in Big South action.Â
Stat Standouts - The upperclassmen generated most of the offense in the match against Winthrop as Kat Cruser and Lexy Cole fueled the attack for the Bulldogs. Cruser led Asheville in scoring with eight kills, while Cole led the team in offensive efficiency with a hitting percentage of .462 with six kills.
First Set - The Bulldogs kept the first frame of the match close, with Lydia Pate and Makenzi Searcy getting back-to-back kills to put Asheville up 8-6. Winthrop responded with a five-point scoring run that put the Eagles into a comfortable 12-8 lead. Cruser and Searcy each notched four kills in the set to bring the Bulldogs back to within six points but were unable to overcome the pace set by Winthrop. The Eagles won the set 25-18.
Second Set - Winthrop took control early in the second set, rattling off a four-point run early on and putting together an 11-point run to put the Eagles up, 16-4. Cruser and Searcy continued to be the main source of offense for the Bulldogs, with the pair collecting four kills during the set. Winthrop finished off the set winning 25-9.
Third Set - Asheville kept up with Winthrop with an early kill from Avery Loeback keeping the set tied at 4-4. Winthrop took the lead shortly after the tie, and kept its advantage for the rest of the set. After a quiet start, Cole began to heat up, hitting four kills for the Bulldogs to keep the score close. Her effort was not enough to turn the tide, and Winthrop took the set, 25-16, to complete the sweep.
Next Up - Asheville, now 3-17 and 0-10 in the Big South, will return to the Justice Center for a slate of home matches beginning with Gardner-Webb on Thursday. The first serve for that matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
