Bulldogs drop a close one in a rematch with Longwood, 76-72
01.08.2022 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Just three days since their matchup in Farmville, Virginia, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team and Longwood clashed again in Big South action on Saturday, with this contest occurring at Kimmel Arena. Asheville scored its most points in a game since early December, but the Lancers came away with the 76-72 win in the end. The loss dips the Bulldogs' records to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in Big South play.
Several contributors fueled the 72-point outburst for Asheville. Kai Carter netted a season-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds. Nadiria Evans added 15 points of her own, while Jordaynia Ivie set a new career-high point total with 11. Furthermore, the trio of Abigail Wilson (seven points, eight rebounds), Mallory Bruce (eight points, 3-for-4 from field), and Maliyah Lockett (six points, five rebounds) also had efficient offensive performances and helped the Bulldogs win the rebounding battle, 35-28.
"I thought we really battled today against a good Longwood team," said Head Coach Honey Brown afterward. "We played without a few key pieces that would have helped our depth a lot more. Mallory (Bruce) and Nia (Ivie) stepped up in some key parts of the game, which is big as freshmen. Kai was very solid for us, and Nadiria did a great job of dealing with traps and physical play all game. I do believe this team has some great basketball ahead of us."
Much like in their matchup on Wednesday, neither team had much luck finding the bottom of the net in the first two quarters. Asheville had a little bit better luck than Longwood did and held a 13-9 lead after 10 minutes of action. Facing a deficit, the Lancers turned up the pressure on the Bulldogs and forced seven turnovers in the second quarter that led to four points. Those four points proved to be the difference in the scoring total in the frame, and the two teams went to the locker room deadlocked at 25 apiece.
When the teams resumed the contest after halftime, the Lancers suddenly found their offensive rhythm. Longwood scored more points in the third quarter (26) than it did in the first two quarters combined (25). Asheville, however, also had some shots drop as it shot 50 percent from the field. Despite these efforts, Longwood led 51-44, heading to the final stanza.
Facing its most significant deficit of the game to that point, the Bulldogs fought back to eventually tie the game at 60 with just under five minutes to go, thanks to a stellar three-point play by Bruce. After trading buckets, Longwood found itself up by three, 67-64, with 2:53 to go before promptly going on a 6-0 run to extend its lead to nine points, 73-64. Asheville chipped into the Lancer lead but ran out of time as Longwood held on for the 76-72 win.
Asheville returns to action on Tuesday when it visits rival Gardner-Webb in another Big South matchup. The tilt between the Bulldogs and Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
