CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon by knocking off Charleston Southern by a score of 59-47 in Big South action. The victory improves Asheville's overall record to 7-9 and 2-3 in conference play.
The tandem of Nadiria Evans and Kai Carter led the way for the Bulldogs on Sunday. Evans, who appeared in a Big South record 135th game on Sunday, led all scorers with 27 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and seven steals. The seven steals by Evans were one shy of tying the program record for steals in a game.
Carter, meanwhile, logged her third double-double of the season with 17 points to go with a team-high 10 rebounds. Jordaynia Ivie (eight points), Amanda Blake (seven rebounds), and Abigail Wilson (five points, seven rebounds) also had solid statistical outings on Sunday to help the cause.
"Really proud of all our players on defense, but especially our post players," said Head Coach Honey Brown afterward. "Amanda, Abigail, and Alonna Sellers all did a great job inside. It's tough to hold someone under 50 on their home court. It was nice to be back to almost a full squad today. Carly Fahey had to play big minutes and was great. Kai and Nadiria played big for us and were ready and able to hit some big shots. Great team effort!"
Charleston Southern, who led the bulk of the first two quarters, got off to a good start shooting nearly 48 percent from the field in the first half. However, Evans kept Asheville within striking distance totaling 15 points to help position her team to make a run. That's what the Bulldogs did as they closed the half on a 6-0 run and built a four-point lead, 28-24, at the break.
After being held relatively quiet in the first half, Carter came up big in the third quarter. The junior forward scored 11 of Asheville's 13 points in the frame, including a trio of made 3-pointers. With Carter playing so well, the Bulldogs built their lead to as many as eight points before the Buccaneers closed the gap a bit to make it a five-point game heading to the fourth, 41-36.
However, five points proved to be as close as Charleston Southern would get, as Asheville closed out the contest on a stellar note. Collectively, the Bulldogs netted 18 points that included eight made free throws down the stretch to finish off the Buccaneers, 59-47.
Asheville will aim to get a winning streak started when it returns to action on Tuesday when it welcomes High Point to Kimmel Arena. Tip-off for that matchup is set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
