Bulldogs battle but fall in final minutes to High Point

01.18.2022 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. The UNC Asheville women's basketball team led the majority of its game Tuesday evening against High Point, but ultimately, the Panthers came away with the victory, 61-57. The loss drops Asheville's record to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Kai Carter led Asheville on Tuesday, who netted a team-high 20 points and matched a career-high with 14 rebounds. Jordaynia Ivie set a new career-high with 12 points, while the tandem of Amanda Blake and Abigail Wilson both tallied nine points and six rebounds in the contest.

"I'm super proud of our young players," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "I believe that experience is only going to help them down the stretch. I thought we played well most of the game but just came up short. I'm excited about what we can accomplish as we continue to move forward."

Playing without two usual starters Nadiria Evans and Faith Adams, the Bulldogs hung with the Panthers well early on. The two teams switched turns with the lead early going before Asheville seemed to seize control in the second quarter. At one point, the Bulldogs rattled off a 12-0 run to change a two-point deficit into a 10-point lead with 3:06 to go in the half. However, High Point did battle back and cut the Bulldog lead back to five points, 31-26, at halftime.

High Point kept the pressure on the Bulldogs in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs seemed to answer every made basket with one of their own. HPU, which trailed by four entering the fourth quarter, saved its best effort for the fourth quarter. The Panthers shot a blistering 81.8 percent from the field on 11 attempts as a team. The last of these made field goals from High Point was with 11 seconds to go to tie the score at 57. Even with the stellar shooting from High Point, Asheville was still in a position to win after that make. However, Asheville committed a costly turnover and foul to put the Panthers on the line with a chance to take the lead. HPU drained both free throws to give it a 59-57 lead. A half-court heave by the Bulldogs ended up being intercepted, and two more made free throws by the Panthers closed out the 61-57 win.

The Bulldogs will aim to get back into the win column on Saturday when they welcome Presbyterian to Kimmel Arena. Tip-off for that contest is set for 2 p.m.
